Abstract：The rapid development of basic medicine and the transformation of its achievements promote the progress of clinical medical practice. In order to accelerate the transformation of hospitals into research-oriented ones which pay equal attention to medical service, medicine teaching and medical research, the government of Beijing has launched the construction of research-oriented wards in recent years as a transition to the construction of researchoriented hospitals. For this purpose, Beijing Hospitals Authority and Beijing University of Civil Engineering and Architecture have launched architectural design research. As a phased achievement, this paper starts with clarifying the connotation and development status of research wards, constructs the overall functional framework of the research oriented hospital, then discusses the layout mode, workflow and functional elements of research wards. Finally it discusses the Theory of Supportive Design about research wards based on the epistemology and methodology of Narrative Evidence-based Medicine.
