Abstract:Based on close reading of Adrian Forty’s book Words and Buildings: A Vocabulary of Modern Architecture, this paper examines the ways in which modernist concepts were constructed and their relations to the ideas of modernist architecture, as well as their significance and problems. From the discussions, the paper tries to demonstrate how to construct a concept is a way of formulating the architectural discourse. The significance of an architectural concept does not so much depend on its meaning, but the function of setting up a critical category. Thus, to analyze its function could be a valid approach to understanding, examining and reconstructing an architectural discourse, and to comparing different discourses generated from different cultural contexts.
