Abstract：In the process of China’s fast urbanization, it is an urgent and realistic issue as how to continue the city’s cultural context, express city characteristics and attributes through urban planning in order to enhance the city environmental quality, promote the harmonious development of society, economy and culture. This paper takes“the Yangtze River City” Dangtu as an example, discusses the systematic method of spatial cognition, protection and utilization based on the historical and cultural resources. It emphasizes the investigation and utilization of the‘cultural-spatial’elements in the urban and rural historical environment as a scientific way to improve the quality of the living environment. This research will provide some references for the planning and design of the urban and rural historical environment in China.
