Abstract:The reality of historical landscape is fragmented by the restricted viewpoint of separate disciplinary specifics. Architects need to consider Historical Urban Landscape within the sense of the design of the new and responsibility for the old. This paper firstly discusses material authenticity, the dialectic between the old and the new, and city as a palimpsest of projects in the tradition of the urban project. Then the case study on Cesano Maderno exemplifies a design-led approach to heritage and Historic Urban Landscape in which reading tools, conservation and design are shown in their mutual relationship. Integrating conservation to insertion, overwriting and grafting, the sequence of designs gives shape to a “regenerative structure” that enhances as a system for historical buildings, public spaces and urban landscape.
