Abstract:The criteria in the evaluation of the visual quality of architectural design nowadays is usually vague, qualitative and subjective, which cannot provide clear guidance for architects, and hence are incapable to effectively manage the design result. This paper introduces the concept of visual saliency, which is a hot topic in the field of computer vision, into architectural design. Through the imitation of human visual attention, it comprehensively discusses the possibility of different architectural features to be observed by human eyes and makes quantitative comparison and objective evaluation between two versions of the same
architecture facade with local alternations. This paper also discusses the effectiveness and limitation of the proposed method. This evaluation method can offer new means to quantify architecture facade’s visual impact; furthermore, it can be used in establishing more accurate evaluation standards and precise regulations for historical preservation, architectural image, landmark design and other issues related to urban image construction.
