Abstract:Space embodies a dual ontology of materiality and sociality, serving as a crucial case for design practice to engage in “learning from everyday life”. This paper provides a retrospective analysis on the fourth-year research-oriented course “Design Ethnography of Everyday Space” in Tongji University’s Environmental Design program, proposing a spatial cognitive framework and working template oriented towards “qualitative definition” for general design education. Adopting the concept of “Nearby” as both a fundamental spatial model and an ethnographic methodology, it introduces three pedagogical cases–“Grocery Store”, “ACGN world” and “Sister from Northeast China”–and sorts out and comments on three task phases in design ethnography: fieldwork, atlas, and writing, along with their objectives, contents, and key theoretical issues. The study emphasizes how spatial “proximity” and “specificity” play an important role in expanding the boundaries of spatial design, providing an ontological framework and critical reflection for the holistic reform of architectural and design pedagogy in terms of cognitive framework and working methodologies.
