Abstract:Established by architect Sung-Sing Kwan in 1920, Kwan, Chu & Yang Architects &Engineers (KCYAE) was one of the earliest architectural firm in China. With the collective efforts of his associates, the business had been expanded across Taiwan and Hong Kong over half a century of its life span. This is a special phenomenon in the historical development of Chinese contemporary architectural firms. The KCYAE was relocated to Taiwan in 1949 due to Chinese civil war conflict, and started another chapter of adaptation and redevelopment. The firm not only learned American management method and working drawing system by cooperating with Adrian Wilson Company, but also merged both Chinese experience and Taiwanese knowledge through employing local professionals. We can also conclude that the architectural style of KCYAL had a tendency of modernism with variations depending on the preferences of different designers. The KCYAL trained professionals played important roles in postwar Taiwan, and influenced both in the fields of architectural practice and education.
