Abstract:This paper studies an important part in modern city planning and urban construction, i.e. the evolution of road cross-section design and related technical standards. As the foundation of western city planning, road cross-section design spread across the globe with distinctive characteristics adaptive to local conditions. With a global comparative method, the paper studies the trajectory of the development of road cross section design based on archival research on a renowned Republican journal on this subject, Road Monthly .In the 1950s, on the other hand, despite obvious Soviet impact road cross-section design included innovative explorations. The paper traces the establishment and development of road cross-section design to extend the research of modern Chinese architecture and urbanism to the post-1949 period.
