Abstract:There was a double-sided cabinet in the center of the living-dining space in “Saito House”, designed by the Japanese architect Seike Kiyoshi. This cabinet was then moved to a lab in his alma mater (Tokyo Tech). Based on the analysis of its hints of space and activity in the past and present everyday life, the concept of “shitsurai” in traditional Japanese life was revealed. This served as a clue for the comparative study of the relationships between the cabinet and the space and living environment in Seike’s early housing works. The relationships between objects, behaviors, and space were therefore discovered, so as to provide a further possibility for interpreting tradition, generating space concepts, and creating new spaces.
