Abstract：This paper especially analyses details at the smallest measurable level in the Salk Institute for Biological Studies in La Jolla, pointing out that from taxonomy to principles and methods, the idea of distinction was carried through in Kahn’s detailing: selection of different unveiled materials according to different parts, functions and requirements of the building; distinction and expression of the hierarchy of parts according to the principle of hierarchy; separation for the articulation of the distinction among elements; integration for the distinction of wider areas of the building; and distinctive echoing for the echoing purpose. As the concept of distinction is brought to perfection, it becomes art, order and the immeasurable.
