Abstract:At the end of the nineteenth century and the early twentieth century, the Young Men Christian Association entered China. They carried out some purposeful construction, aimed at putting “spiritual, mental, physical, social” education into effect: selecting their site in the center of Chinese cities, introducing certain existing functions and spatial patterns, using modern building equipment, arranging all kinds of recreational facilities and activities, adopting a meaningful form, and building an architectural image of fashionable and modern. Meanwhile, they provided a kind of daily life experience for urban youth and social elites. Consequently, they shaped their understanding of “modern people” and the values of youth associations. This paper probes into the way of YMCA buildings intervening in the city under the background of modern Chinese history. That is, how to convey the meaning through the tangible architectural elements, such as site selection, functional configuration, space, form, and so on, in the purpose of reshaping the youth.
