Abstract：This article proposes four material generation mechanisms that record and restore the phenomena of built environment, in order to aid researchers on architecture and landscape architecture to systematically explore original materials in historical research. The four mechanisms include the design and built process, social communication process, the running and management process, and the research and exchange process. These mechanisms can expand the sources of research materials in the research planning and material gathering processes and help to find materials of relevance and originality.
