Abstract:“Vine city” is an urban design concept developed in the contemporary practice of China’s urbanization. Through analysis of the development of the relationship between the city and countryside, the urban crisis of the UK at the turn of the 20th century and its determinants, as well as the similarities and differences between current urban development of China and that of the UK, this paper proposes the context, conditions and implications of the “vine city” concept and reflects on the typical experiences manifested in the process of China’s urbanization by examining the case of the Wanfenglin New District. It explores the meaning of “vine city” concept from a perspective of urban-rural integration and its significance to China’s urban development in terms of urban pattern, development model, identity construction and economic growth.
