Abstract:The “Neighborhood Unit” concept emerged in America in the 1920s, with close relation to sociology and real estate economics. Responding to the urban sprawl driven by cars under Fordism, this theory was deduced as a set of design guidelines for residential communities from practical projects in New York, London, etc. In about half a century, it had been widely applied to land subdivision and new district planning throughout North America and even diffused to some other countries. Since the end of the 1980s it has served as one of the theoretical bases for the nascent New Urbanism. This essay gives a retrospective study of the transformation of “Neighborhood Unit” in the past century, and reviews its position and methodology.
