Abstract：With the contemporary rapid urbanization and turbulent invasion of foreign culture, the external spatial form of urban blocks becomes unusually convergent. Cultural dislocation has become a very common problem in the cities of China. This paper explores the regional mode of external spatial form of traditional buildings under the modernization context, which is beneficial to provide scientific evaluation standard for the organic succession of cities. In this paper, while looking at Chongqing of the Republican Era, document arrangement and on-the-spot survey have been carried out for its historical building clusters.The correspondence between exterior spatial features and “essence” is obtained by analyzing typical cases and sorting out the components of exterior space environment. It also concludes that the boundary, plane and elevation components, circulation and form serve as indispensable parts of the exterior space environment of buildings in Chongqing of the Republican Era.
