Abstract：The design concept of the Natatorium of Rongjiang County in the southeast of Guizhou Province followed the two major principles of architectural regionalism and sustainable development. The design strategy organically combined modern function, modern material technology, and modern design concept, as well as traditional architectural elements which included drum tower, Fengyu Bridge, and the piled dwelling house of the Miao and Dong ethnic group. The design used the local traditional wooden structure and a wooden arch with a 50-meter-long span, and made full use of natural lighting and natural ventilation. It also used local materials, such as wood and stone, and locally applied techniques. The design of “Sky River” made for lighting and insulation also. The building featured a combination of both sports events and daily use, emphasizing the life cycle of long-term use. In conclusion, the design aimed to create a new local contemporary architecture with regional characteristics and the principle of sustainable development.
