Abstract：There has been the problem of homogenization and heterogeneity in modern cities, which is in sharp contrast with the harmonious and lively historical city blocks. This paper explores form generation approach in urban design based on shape grammar formalism and parametric technique. It first briefly analyses the characteristics of historical city; then it introduces shape grammar and parametric technique, interprets the relationship between the formalism and design styles, and proposes a suitable approach for historical city form generation in urban design; finally through the case of a traditional Chinese water town in Taihu basin, it testifies the approach, and discusses the inner-correlation between urban design guidelines and shape grammar rules.
