Abstract:This paper introduces Christopher Alexander, the relevant historical background and the point of departure of his architectural theories. According to the order of his literary work, Alexander’s architectural theories are analyzed. The paper illustrates and analyzes Alexander’s architectural theories from three aspects: origination, development, and reflection. Alexander’s theoretical shift can be summarized as shifting from disintegration synthesis into pattern language, rationalism into structuralism, and from subject-object dichotomy into allround integration. It also points out the limitations of Alexander’s architectural theories: the overemphasis on public participation, the lack of persuasion of pattern language, and the limited theoretical scope of pattern language.
