Abstract:Different combination of components in hip rafter comprises a constraint condition of the cornice curve in traditional architecture, which is regarded as a key factor of molding a facade. This article makes a study on Xi’an Bell Towers, a representative case of central Shaanxi plain’s woodworkers’ craft during the Ming Dynasty, which shares an approximate construction structural methods with the official architecture practice in the joint of hip rafter. Nevertheless, the secondary part of hip rafter changes a lot and thus leading to the cornice curve crimped radically, which is considered to be a natural result of the considerable immigration from Yangtze River basin to the central of Shaanxi plain in the Middle of Qing Dynasty, and eventually a regional tectonic tradition in the area. Based on the case study of Xi’an Bell Tower, this article discusses the development process of hip rafter’s construction methods in the central Shaanxi plain in the Ming and Qing Dynasty and the technique communications in relevant areas.
