Abstract:As a new approach to community-based facility for the elderly, adaptive remodeling of abandoned buildings has become a prevailing trend and supported by government policies. Empirical research in Shanghai has revealed four common problems in community-based facilities transformed from abandoned buildings: unfriendly-interface, traffic-obstacle, low-performance and insufficient-illumination. Lessons are introduced from four successful projects, which have all balanced elderly services with community attribute. According to the problems and lessons, four principles are concluded to promote adaptive remodeling: site selection, integrated service, security management and environmental illumination.
