Abstract:Public space is continuing to be shaped and re-defined by power and capital through the historical process of modernization. To understand the ambiguity of public space is a necessary process for urban planner and architect’s reflexive thinking and creative practice, so as to create the physical form to foster the ambiguity of public space. Maintaining order and re-structuring order are the dialectical relationship of spatial practice between its content and direction. Capitalism survives through innovative cutting, separating and relating spaces, as well as changing everyday life. This paper provides a critical discussion of two kinds of public spaces: “bunch of tubes” and “node”, which are shaped by power and capital in order to control and adjust the social orders and deal with crisis. The production of physical public space cannot escape from this context. But due to the ambiguity of public space, its production may lead to the possibility of anti-alienation.
