Abstract:Traditional villages and military settlements in ancient and modern times have been of various functions such as residence, defense, trade, and so on. They are similar, but simultaneously significantly different due to some factors such as site selection, function and historical evolution. This paper studies the 143 traditional villages along the Silk Road and 918 military settlements on the Great Wall of the Ming dynasty. With the ArcGIS platform and aerial photographs, the spatial distribution and location characteristics were analyzed. Based on the basic information database of traditional villages of CAUPD and the Ming Great Wall Spatial Database of research group, representative cases were selected to quantitatively compare the historical evolution, structure and characteristics of various functional layouts, so as to provide“inheritance genes”for contemporary reference and inheritance.
