Which Kinds of Bedrooms Are More Suitable for Residential Facilities for the Elderly in China: Results and Inspirations of a Study on Facility Users’ Preferences
Abstract:In this study, users’ preferences for bedroom types in residential facilities for the elderly are examined through questionnaire surveys to facility residents, their relatives and administrative staff in Shanghai. The result suggests that resident relatives and facility staff tend to prefer shared bedrooms concerning economic cost and working convenience, yet the elders themselves had greatly preferences for private rooms and double rooms. The conflict reflects distinct cognitions of privacy sense, which are significantly influenced by gender, marital status and former occupation of the elders. Based on the findings, design optimization strategies for bedrooms in care facilities for the elderly are further discussed.
