Abstract:This study mainly analyzes four roles of Charles-Edouard Jeanneret with regard to his training of architecture from 1900 to 1917: an architectural student of the La Chaux-de-Fonds Art School in his hometown, an apprentice of famous international architects’ offices, an architect-traveler, and a young architectural practitioner. Jeanneret’s understanding and reflection of architecture directly became the source of ideas of Le Corbusier and reasons of forms of his works.
During this period, he exposed himself to the industrialized culture, and raised questions as his main voice. Although he was very far away from his desired answers, he chose the camp of “absolute” modern architecture, and showed attitude of rupture and willingness of renovation. He had strong “ego” and special “unrealistic” posture, and was destined to go beyond Jeanneret of La Chauxde-Fonds and his local cultural circle.
